PLACES TO VISIT

We are on Mount Pietralata, in the State Natural Wildlife Reserve of the Furlo Gorge between the Apennines and the Adriatic Coast. The Furlo Gorge (Gola del Furlo) is itself an extraordinary monument to nature.

Its imposing rocky faces, looking down on the Candigliano River, house many protected, nearly extinct birds, such as the golden eagle, peregrine falcon, eagle owl and the “picchio muraiolo” (“wall” woodpecker), to the joy of bird lovers. Walking the paths which take you to the top of the mountain it is not rare to meet squirrels and deer.

There are many interesting plants on the top of the Furlo mountains: various ferns, local orchids, perennial herbaceous plants, including the very rare “meringia”. The warmer side of the mountains are covered with various oaks, hornbeams, honeysuckle and “strawberry” trees.

We are close to Acqualagna, very famous for its white truffles, and the International Truffle Fair held during the first two weeks in November. Also nearby is Urbino, an international cultural treasure and masterpiece of renaissance architecture with its majestic Ducal Palace and Marches Art Gallery.
